Whether you’re a local or a tourist, chances are if you’ve been to Australia, you’ve been to Sydney. As the largest city in the country and the capital of New South Wales, Sydney is a destination for many people.
While it could take you years to get to know Sydney completely, there are also wonderful things to do and see within an easy day’s drive from Sydney.
Some of these destinations are just an hour north of Sydney, making them perfect for day trips and rated some of the best national parks in NSW.
Next time you’re in this beautiful city, we encourage you to explore a bit beyond it!

1. The Blue Mountains
This World Heritage region is just a 2 hour journey from Sydney, which you can do by car or train. As the name suggests, the Blue Mountains National Park is known for its outdoor opportunities, stunning views, and quaint little towns.
The most iconic sight to see in the Blue Mountains is arguably the Three Sisters Rock Formation. You can get to the best spot for viewing and photography via the Echo Point Lookout, which also serves as the starting point for several hiking trails. While the Three Sisters is the most emblematic activity, the Aboriginal artwork, walking trails, and mountain charm in villages such as Leura and Katoomba also deserve to be seen and appreciated! The Grand Canyon Track is another key attraction within the Blue Mountains, offering breathtaking views and a unique hiking experience.
The Blue Mountains are all about exploration!
You can hike around the area, going down into the valley, take a cable car ride to see everything from above, or get out into the scenery by biking, hiking, or walking. For those who are even more adventurous, you can go hiking or rappelling near the caves and water features.
Outdoor rock climbing is another thrilling activity available in the Blue Mountains, offering breathtaking views and an adrenaline rush for adventure enthusiasts. Scenic World, with its family-friendly attractions like the Cableway, Skyway, and Railway rides, is an essential stop for day trips from Sydney.
The Jenolan Caves
The Jenolan Caves will blow you away and are located in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. They are one of the oldest and most spectacular cave systems in the world. Formed over 340 million years ago, these limestone caves feature breathtaking stalactites, stalagmites, and underground rivers.
They are renowned for their stunning beauty and complex network of caverns, making them a popular destination for tourists and adventure seekers. Visitors can explore the caves through guided tours, and the area also offers walking trails, wildlife spotting, and accommodations in historic buildings.
However, I would say to check the Jenolan Cave website as they are currently doing major work around the cave system and are set to reopen soon.
In fact, there is so much to do in the Blue Mountains, you may wish to make it more than a one day trip out of Sydney!
One of the benefits of extending your trip in the Blue Mountains would include the opportunity to see the famous, nocturnal glow worms. These bioluminescent worms take over some of the Blue Mountain caves at night, creating a spectacular, natural show!
2. Royal National Park
Around an hour south of Sydney, you’ll find the Royal National Park, which definitely qualifies as one of the best day trips from Sydney!
In fact, the Royal National Park is one of the oldest national parks in the entire world. It is one of Sydney’s best day trips, since it’s so close by and offers a variety of activities!
It is most well known for the stunning views in every direction, so pack your camera and a picnic and be ready to be amazed!
One of the best ways to get to know Royal National Park is through its hiking and walking trails. Experienced hikers will want to tackle the Coast Track, which winds over 25 kilometres of the beautiful coastline, while more laid-back walkers will appreciate the Forest Path Loop for its serene forest vibes.
Beyond walking and hiking, there are plenty of other ways to experience the park. Surfers and beach goers will appreciate the variety of swimming spots. Boating and kayaking are also popular choices for those wanting to get out on the water without having to swim.
All in all, Royal National Park is a great day trip destination from Sydney because of the variety of activities available there. Whether you want to explore on foot, by bike, or bring your surfboard out for a spin, Royal National Park has the spot for you!
This is always a favourite and one of my best day trips out of Sydney and would definitely recommend going to Wattamolla beach.
3. Hunter Valley
For the wine enthusiasts out there, look no further for your best one day trips from Sydney than Hunter Valley! Hunter Valley is a mere 2 hours from Sydney when travelling by car. It offers some of the best gourmet food and wine experiences available near Sydney!
In fact, there are over 150 different wineries that flourish in this region, known primarily for varietals such as Shiraz and Semilllon. While you’ll want to do your own research and pick the right wineries for you, the most popular choices include Audrey Wilkinson and Piggs Peake.
Hunter Valley Gardens is another key attraction in the region, featuring vibrant themed gardens, topiary displays, and family-friendly activities such as fairground rides. It’s a prime destination for day trips from Sydney, offering wine tasting and dining at nearby cafes.
Even if wine isn’t your favourite thing, the region has an incredible food culture, which has flourished to support the wine. From fine-dining experiences and gourmet cheese tastings to handmade chocolates, the culinary culture will not disappoint in Hunter Valley.
Although Hunter Valley is most known for its wineries, there is more to do in this region!
For those seeking adventure, hot air balloon rides over the vineyards offer stunning views and exhilaration. If you’d rather stay closer to the ground, play a round on one of the region’s stunning golf courses, such as Cypress Lakes Golf Club or the Vintage Golf Club, or take a horseback riding tour through the beautiful scenery.
You can even treat yourself to a day of serenity and pampering with the luxurious retreat-style spas dotted around the region. No matter what you choose, Hunter Valley offers a serene escape from the hectic city life in Sydney!
4. South Coast
Hop in the car and ride a few hours south of Sydney to enter the South Coast region!
If you’re after beautiful beaches, the South Coast should be on your list of best one day trips from Sydney! This region is absolutely brimming with natural beauty, small towns, and wonderful activities that will always leave you wanting more.
From the cute kangaroos wandering on Pebbly Beach to the natural blue pool of Bermagui, the South Coast region is absolutely magical. While there are plenty of sub-spots to enjoy at South Coast, two of my top favourites include Jervis Bay and Huskisson. I would also recommend seeing Hyams beach (so clean it squeaks) and Green Patch
Jervis Bay will be the right pick for any animal or wildlife enthusiasts, since dolphins can be seen through this area all year long. If you go at the right time of year, generally between May and November, you can also witness whales migrating through the region.
Additionally, the white sand beaches and gem toned water are perfect for swimming and laying out by the water. I recommend the White Sands Walk, the best beach walk in the world and around a 2.5km walk of pure beauty.
If you’re wanting to be active on your mini-vacation, Batemans Bay is likely the better choice. Batemans Bay is known for spectacular surfing, fishing, and swimming spots in the ocean.
However, Batemans also runs right along the Clyde River, which creates a whole other set of activities, from boating and kayaking to more secluded fishing spots.
No matter whether you choose one of these spots or your own, the South Coast holds plenty of beautiful places to explore in a single day!
5. Port Stephens
Don’t let the 2 and a half hour drive north deter you, Port Stephens is absolutely worth the drive as a Sydney day trip location from Sydney!
Whale watching and dolphin watching are the most popular activities in the Port Stephens area. That’s because Port Stephens houses a big population of bottlenose dolphins. There are plenty of tour providers and boat companies that take people out onto the water to see the dolphins in their natural habitat. It’s absolutely magical and something you can experience all year round.
However, if you plan your day trip from Sydney correctly, you can be there during whale migration season. From May to November, Port Stephens is also a great place to try to catch a view of humpback whale migration.
Again, you’ll find plenty of tour offerings that will take you out onto the water for the best chance to see this natural phenomenon!
In addition to wildlife viewing, there are lots of activities to do in the area. For those interested in great views, Tomaree National Park has incredible, panoramic views, as well as high-energy activities on the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, such as sandboarding and biking.
If you’d rather have a beach escape, head over to Nelson Bay or One Mile Beach for great snorkelling, surfing, diving, and swimming opportunities. As you can see, Port Stephens has plenty of things for you to see and experience and is one of the best day trips from Sydney!
6. North of Sydney
Central coast
Just an hour north of Sydney, the Central Coast offers cosy cafes, old stores, fabulous art and some nice natural landscapes like those at Long Jetty, a hidden gem just across the entrance.
It hosts a range of stunning beaches, such as Avoca and Terrigal, perfect for swimming, surfing, and relaxation. If you are like me and fancy the day out with the dog (Kevin) then there is a great dog beach called North Shelly Dog Beach.
Beyond the beaches, explore the lush Bouddi National Park with its scenic coastal walks and abundant wildlife.
The region also boasts a vibrant food scene, with waterfront dining, boutique wineries, and local markets.
Spend The Day At Palm Beachc
This 1 hour drive from Sydney is worth every minute. A few friends have been known occasionally for stalking Home & Away sets in this area, even seeing them filming around the Boathouse!
Palm Beach is a location where you can relax on one side by the beach and Kayak on the still water on the other. Barrenjoey Lighthouse is also situated at top of the hill and takes about 30 minutes to hike up the trail.
If you want a different view try West Head Lookout, a key attraction within Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes, including the famous Barrenjoey Lighthouse and Pittwater.
Beyond Sydney: Day Trips From Sydney
Although many locals and tourists never make the effort to explore beyond Sydney’s city limits, it’s a wonderful experience!
From the Blue Mountain rock formations to whale watching at Port Stephens, there are incredible sights lying just beyond the confines of Sydney.
