5 fun things to do in Sydney for couples

“If Paris is a city of lights, Sydney is the city of fireworks”
Baz Luhrmann

The home of over 100 beaches, a floating forest, and one of the seven wonders of the world, Sydney is a breathtaking destination for couples. Whether you’re looking for a romantic date night or an action-packed way to spend an anniversary, there are plenty of romantic things to do in Sydney.

Romantic things to do in Sydney

From award-winning restaurants to adventure-packed national parks, there are countless activities for couples in Sydney. Here’s our list of the top five experiences for you and your loved one to enjoy.

1. Take a harbour cruise

Sydney Harbour is one of the most iconic sights in Australia, and by far the best way to experience it is by boat. A Sydney Harbour dinner cruise presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you and your partner to witness the sunset behind the Opera House as you raise a glass to the both of you.

Couples visiting between May and November can instead opt to head out on a midday harbour cruise and keep their eyes peeled for some of the 38,000+ whales that are expected to pass Sydney Harbour this year. With Humpbacks, Minke, Orca and Southern Right Whales, you and your love will be delighted by the spectacular show.

Price: from $69pp.

2. Visit Taronga Zoo

One of the best activities for couples in Sydney is a visit to Taronga Zoo. The home to over 350 animal species including koalas and kangaroos, animal lovers are in for a real treat at Taronga. There are plenty of things for couples to see and do including behind-the-scenes tours, exclusive animal encounters and romantic overnight stays in eco-lodges.

The Wild Australia Experience is our choice for couples, taking small groups on a journey of discovery throughout the zoo. Led by expert keepers, you and your partner will enjoy an unforgettable hands-on experience that includes working in an animal kitchen and meeting hand-raised animals.

Zoo entry: $45.90.

The Wild Australia Experience: $129pp (including zoo entry).

3. Take a walk

Sydney is famous for its beautiful beaches and, thankfully, there are plenty to choose from. There is also much to see and do on Sydney’s beaches, giving couples the chance to enjoy the sunshine, hit the waves, or head out on a beautiful coastal walk.

The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is one of Sydney’s most iconic walks. With breathtaking views across the oceans and surrounding clifftops, the route is an exceptional experience for couples in Sydney. The 6km walk is a ‘grade 2’ track that’s suitable for most ages and fitness levels.

Starting from Bondi Beach, you’ll head onto a paved path where migrating whales are often spotted in the winter months. Then you’ll head to Bronte Beach where you can pause for a coffee and a bite to eat in one of many cafes. After that, you’ll continue along towards Gordon’s Bay – home to a 600m underwater nature trail – where you’ll take in the magnificent views. Finally, you’ll arrive at Coogee Beach – a beautiful spot to rest and relax after your adventure.

Duration: without stops, the route takes 2-3 hours to complete.
Price: unguided routes are free. Walking tours start from $50pp.

4. Treat yourself to a spa day

Couples massages offer many benefits for couples. They can help to improve communication and intimacy, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote relaxation. Many believe that a shared spa day experience helps to strengthen relationships by providing an opportunity for couples to spend quality time together.

5. Enjoy a romantic dinner

Sharing an evening at an award-winning restaurant is one of the most romantic things to do in Sydney, and indeed anywhere in the world. The Sydney foodscape is a melting pot of classic Australian food with ingredients freshly sourced from local farms. We recommend:

ARIA Restaurant

The ARIA sits beside the edge of Sydney’s world-famous harbour where the Opera House and Harbour Bridge create a wonderful photo frame. Executive Chef Tom Gorringe designs award-winning menus centred around the seasonal availability of local produce. With an innovative ‘paddock to plate’ ethos, ARIA is both picture-perfect and delightfully delicious.

Luke’s Kitchen

Luke’s Kitchen is based within the Kimpton Margot Sydney and is well-known for breakfast, casual lunch or a Modern Australian dinner. The restaurant emulates the old-world glamour of Sydney to establish a warm and welcoming environment where people love to dine. After dinner, couples are welcome in the private lounge bar that neighbours the restaurant.

Sydney for Couples

Sydney is a city full of adventure and romance, and these are just a few of the many fun things for couples to do here. Whether you’re a local or visiting from afar, you’re sure to find plenty of ways to make lasting memories with your loved one.
