It is 17 kilometres long, stretching between Point Vernon and Urangan Pier, so you can take most of the day to explore by bike or by foot. There are plenty of places to spot and take a break, and it’s stroller-friendly if you have kids in tow. One of the nice outdoor things to do in Hervey Bay.
2. Enjoy the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens
Founded in 1974, the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens is one of the classic Hervey Bay things to do! It sits on the site of 6,000 year old dunes, which sprawl over 25 hectares of space. The Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens are home to a wide range of plant species, especially those native to the Wide Bay and Great Sandy regions.
In addition to the native plants on display, you can also appreciate the Orchid House (with over 5,500 orchids) and the Australian bush tucker garden, which honours the land’s original owners, the Butchulla people. While the gardens are free to visit, be mindful of the open hours: generally 9:00 to 2:30 pm on weekdays. You wouldn’t want to head out there, only to realise it’s closed!
3. Appreciate Local Art at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery
Starting with the giant humpback sculpture outside, the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery creates a warm and welcoming gallery experience for visitors and locals alike. This is a local and iconic gallery that is closed on Mondays though this didn’t hinder my visit that much.
There is a luscious green park that extends as its front yard. Had no idea that it existed until we arrived. The locals seem to enjoy the park very much, walking with their families and their four legged friends. Recommend taking a stroll.
The space supports a mixture of internally-curated shows and hosted national exhibitions, which rotate from city to city. There are also localised exhibitions, which tell a universal story through the particular lens of the Hervey Bay community. 4. Catch a Sunrise at Dundowran Beach
Though there are plenty of beaches in Australia, Dundowran Beach is unique for its peaceful atmosphere, calm water, and pristine beaches. You can easily access Dundowran Beach on the eastern side with the parking area or walk in from several paths scattered around the western area, near Ted & Maude Mungomery’s Vine Forest Reserve.
The morning in this area is particularly magical, with the sounds of the bird species echoing from the Reserve. It is a popular fishing spot, appropriate for all ages; plus, you have the chance to catch a Whiting, the most coveted fish in all of Hervey Bay.
Even if you don’t want to do any fishing, Hervey Bay is the perfect spot to walk around, enjoy the view, and the parkland around the pier. Great for an afternoon out! Additionally, Urangan Pier offers opportunities for fishing trips, making it a versatile destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
The Urangan Pier Park Community Marketplace offers visitors a delightful shopping experience as well as a friendly meeting experience. The markets are held in the picturesque spot near the famous Urangan Pier and are a host to everything from local products to handmade items, vintage clothing and handmade wooden puzzles and jewellery.
7. Splash Around at Wetside Water Park
If you have any kids in your group, they are going to fall in love with Wetside Water Park! This is one of the best Hervey Bay things to do with kids. There are splash pads, squirters, play areas, and more for the kids! It is suitable for kids of any age, though the park is most catered to younger kids.
Be warned that if you want to ride down the waterslides that does come at an extra cost. However, it’s reasonable and well worth spending a little for the extra fun, especially if you’re visiting on a hot day.
8. See Some Wildlife Photography at Into the Wild Photography
Home to the photography of notable wildlife and landscape photographer, Michael Smith, Into the Wild Photography is a fun place to get a spectacular view of many of Hervey Bay’s marvellous animals.

You’ll feel like you’re walking up to a neighbour’s home, as you weave through the gardens and approach the cottage. Inside you’ll find a treasure trove of locally-crafted gifts and goodies. You can browse for free, though you may want to pick up a few things to remember your trip.
